Visit to Dajin Offshore factory in China.
Box Coating visited the monopile manufacturer Dajin Offshore factory, based in China. Box Coating was part of a Shell audit team to evaluate the capabilities of Dajin to deliver Wind Towers and Offshore Foundations for the Offshore Wind Industry.
The focus of Box Coating was on the Coating facilities of the Dajin factory. The Dajin factory is entering the European market and had already delivered monopiles for several European Offshore Wind projects
WindEurope Event in Bilbao, Spain from 20-22 March 2024
The entire wind industry will be in Bilbao from 20-22 March. You can expect over 12,000 visitors in the BEC over the three days. And over 500 companies on the exhibition floor will be ready to showcase their latest products and do business with you.
Box Coating will also be present at this event and will use this floor for networking and making contacts to other companies related to the Offshore Wind Industry.
Focus will be on the corrosion protection options for the wind turbine foundations and secondary steel structures. Due to the extending lifetime of the offshore wind farm, the importance of selection and application of coating system is highlighted.
When you are intending to visit the WindEurope Event, please contact me and we can discuss how Box Coating can support you.
Coating SME for Ecowende Offshore Wind
Since April this year I have a new assignment as Coating Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Ecowende. The Ecowende wind farm (Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI) will be located about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast, near IJmuiden. With an installed capacity of approximately 760 MW, we can make about 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. The plan is to commission the wind farm in 2026.
Hollandse Kust West (HKW) lot VI will be the first offshore wind farm with a focus on ecology – from design, construction and operation to research and knowledge sharing. We do this by minimising the negative effects on the ecosystem as much as possible while boosting positive effects. As such, we find ourselves at the start of future wind farms with a net positive impact: a flourishing ecosystem, a minimised impact on marine mammals, birds and bats, and a vibrant marine life.
My role is to support Ecowende with the corrosion protection strategy during the different phases of the project (design, construction, installation and commissioning) for all the offshore steel structures
I am looking forward to engage with the Ecowende team and provide ecological options for the corrosion protection strategy.
It has been an interesting year for Box Coating as Coating Subject Matter Expert for the CrossWind HKN Offshore Wind project.
The project has almost passed the stages of design and construction for the primary and secondary steel and is now fully in progress with the offshore installation of the Monopiles, Boat Landings and Platforms (MAP and HOP).
The construction had taken place at several sites in the Netherlands (SIF at the Maasvlakte, Amicon in Sneek) and at Marketex in Tallin, Estonia and during regular visits the coating application and final coating performance was inspected.
It can be concluded that the corrosion protection for this project is in compliance with the objective to achieve minimum 25 years maintenance free for the primary and secondary steel structures.
This summer Box Coating started with the Box Coating cycling team. Cycling is a relaxing activity which can be executed along the interesting Dutch sceneries. We have a very good network of cycling routes and during my spare time I like to race with the cycling team along the roads.
It fits well with my strategy on renewable energy projects.
Besides cycling, the company is doing well:
As the NACE International, Corrosion Society and SSPC,
The Society for Protective Coatings have merged to form the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), also the NACE Certification has been changed.
My NACE Level 3 Coating Inspector certificate is now changed to the AMPP certification. The AMPP society will stand as a unified voice for the corrosion control and protective coatings industries. The AMPP Senior Certified Coatings Inspectors are recognized as experts in their field. They have expert knowledge in all areas of coating inspection including: surface preparation, coating types, inspection criteria, lab testing, and failure modes for various coatings, including specialized coatings and linings.
These AMPP certified coating inspectors are used as independent source of knowledge related to all kind of different coating subjects.
A very Happy New Year!
The first year of Box Coating has been a success despite the Corona pandemic.
I have been providing consultancy services for several customers such as global paint manufacturers and coating suppliers for pipelines.
Coating inspection for vendor approval and qualification purposes have been executed for projects and customers at the locations of the customers. This includes steel structures such as valves, line pipe for the oil & gas industry, and steel structures for offshore wind projects.
A main activity is the role of Coating Subject Matter Expert for the Crosswind HKN offshore wind project. For some French offshore wind farms I have been involved in review of coating related documentation (specifications and ITP).
You can still contact me for consultancy and inspection jobs.
Last but not least: Box Coating is the official shirtsponsor of a local football team!
